Free $1200 For Your Child’s Education

Thinking about your child’s future is something all parents go through, and one of the most significant investments you can make is in their education.
Fortunately, the BC Government provides many programs that give families an opportunity to start their journey easily.

Understanding the BC Training and Education Savings Grant

The BC Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG) is a unique initiative designed to encourage families in British Columbia to start saving early for their children’s post-secondary education.
This grant is a one-time payment from the province that contributes $1,200 to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for eligible children. It’s a significant boost for families looking to ease the financial burden of higher education.
Unlike other grants, it does not require any matching contributions from the parents. The grant aims to make post-secondary education more accessible by encouraging early savings, thus promoting higher education and skill development among the youth.

How Does the BCTESG Work?

To receive the BCTESG, parents or guardians must open an RESP for their child and apply for the grant once they turn 6 years old. The grant will only be available until the child turns 9 years old.
Once approved, the grant is deposited directly into the RESP. The funds can be used to cover a variety of educational expenses, including tuition, books, and living costs, as long as the child enrolls in a qualifying post-secondary institution.
The grant money is not subject to any tax while it remains in the RESP. However, when the funds are withdrawn for educational purposes, they are taxed as income in the hands of the student, who typically has a lower tax rate. In most cases, students have little or no income while they attend post-secondary, making the withdrawal usually tax-free.

Who is Eligible for the BCTESG?

To be eligible for the BCTESG, the following criteria must be met:
  1. Residency: The child and their parent or guardian must be residents of British Columbia.
  2. RESP: The child must have an RESP account set up with a participating financial institution.
  3. Application Deadline: The application for the BCTESG must be submitted between the child’s sixth and ninth birthday.
It’s important to note that the BCTESG is available to all eligible children, regardless of the family’s income level.

Where Can You Apply for the BCTESG?

Applying for the BC Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG) is a straightforward process, but it’s important to know where to start. Here’s how you can apply:
  1. Visit a Participating Financial Institution: The first step is to ensure you have an RESP account with a financial institution that offers the BCTESG. Most financial institutions in British Columbia participate in this program. If you already have an RESP, check with your provider to confirm they can process the BCTESG application.
  2. Complete the Application: Once you have an RESP with a participating institution, you can apply for the BCTESG through them. The application process typically involves filling out a form provided by the institution. You will need to provide details such as your child’s Social Insurance Number (SIN) and proof of BC residency. The institution will guide you through the necessary steps.
  3. Submit Before the Deadline: Ensure that you apply for the BCTESG within the eligible timeframe—between your child’s sixth and ninth birthday. It’s crucial to submit your application before your child turns nine to avoid missing out on the grant.
  4. Confirmation and Deposit: After the application is processed, and if your child is eligible, the $1,200 grant will be deposited directly into the RESP. Your financial institution will notify you once the funds are available.

An Example of the BCTESG in Action

Let’s say Lisa and Mark, who live in British Columbia, have a daughter named Emily, born on March 15, 2017.
They decide to start saving for Emily’s education early and open an RESP for her when she turns five. When Emily turns six in 2023, they apply for the BCTESG.
Since they meet all the eligibility criteria, the government approves their application, and $1,200 is deposited into Emily’s RESP.
Over the years, Lisa and Mark continue to contribute to Emily’s RESP. By the time Emily is ready to attend university, the RESP has grown significantly due to their contributions, the BCTESG, and the investment income earned within the plan.
This financial support helps cover Emily’s tuition fees, reducing the amount of student loans she needs to take out.
